How long until you actually speak Romanian?

Good news: for English speakers, Romanian is an FSI Category I language — the same difficulty group as Spanish or French. It’s a Romance language: if you know some Italian, Spanish or French, you’re already halfway into the vocabulary.

A1
~2–3 months

Survival Romanian

Greetings, shopping, taxis, restaurants. You stop pointing at things.

A2
~4–6 months

Everyday conversations

Small talk with neighbors, phone calls, simple work chats. The level most citizenship interviews (naturalization) require in practice.

B1
~12–18 months

Independent speaker

Real conversations on most topics. The level required for the citizenship-restoration certificate (Law 14/2025).

B2

Confident & fluent

Complex discussions at work, humor, nuance. Romanians stop switching to English around you.

Don’t know your level? Take the free assessment — a short, friendly chat with one of our teachers.

Preparing for Romanian citizenship?

Two legal routes, two different requirements. We prepare you for both — honestly.

Art. 8

Naturalization (Article 8)

The ANC citizenship interview is an oral conversation in Romanian — about you, your life in Romania — plus questions on the Constitution and the national anthem. We prepare you with mock interviews in the exact format, and get your Romanian comfortably past the required level.

Art. 11

Citizenship restoration (Article 11)

Since Law 14/2025, applicants need a B1 language certificate issued by the Romanian Language Institute (ILR), the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) or an accredited university. To be clear: no private school can issue this certificate — anyone who claims otherwise is misleading you. What we do is prepare you to pass the B1 exam, at your pace.

Foreigners who actually learned Romanian

★ 4.9 · 52 reviews Read our reviews →

„After two years of “I’ll learn it someday”, I finally have real conversations with my Romanian colleagues. The 8 AM lessons before standup were the trick.”

D Dmitri Software engineer · reached B1

„We rehearsed the ANC interview so many times that the real one felt short. The Constitution questions were exactly the format we practiced.”

J Julien Passed his citizenship interview

„My soacră (mother-in-law — see, I know the word now) doesn’t speak English. Sunday lunches went from awkward smiles to actual family.”

M María Finally talks with her in-laws

One corporate cohort has been learning with the same IBSEN teacher since 2023 — from absolute zero to conversational B1.

Teachers who specialize in Romanian for foreigners

8 of our teachers specialize in teaching Romanian to foreigners — through English, French or Russian. They know the traps (yes, the noun cases), they’ve heard every excuse, and they will not let you quit.

Crina Simon Crina Simon teaches in English
Felicia Pruteanu Felicia Pruteanu teaches in English
Alina Bratosin Alina Bratosin teaches in French
Denisa Kovacs Denisa Kovacs teaches in English & French
Magda Blănari Magda Blănari teaches in English
Anca Remeta Anca Remeta teaches in English
Laura Marcu Laura Marcu teaches in French
Anna Gladysheva Anna Gladysheva teaches in Russian

If after a few lessons the teacher doesn’t feel right, we’ll switch you to another — no awkward conversations needed.

For companies

Relocating employees to Romania?

We run online Romanian courses for international teams. Level testing for every employee, group scheduling around shifts, attendance reports for HR, and invoicing per company.

!

New in 2026

Under OUG 32/2026, employers of non-EU staff must provide Romanian language and cultural-integration training — minimum 6 months, 6 hours/week. Fines go up to 40,000 RON. We build compliant programs and handle the paperwork trail.

How it works

1

Free level assessment

A 10-minute conversation with a teacher. If you’re a complete beginner, we skip it and start from zero.

2

We match you

Teacher, format and schedule built around your goal — conversation, citizenship, work — and your calendar.

3

Demo lesson, then decide

Have a first lesson. If it clicks, you continue — paying per lesson, not per semester.

Questions foreigners actually ask us

Is Romanian hard to learn for English speakers?

Easier than its reputation. The US Foreign Service Institute puts Romanian in Category I — the same group as Spanish, French and Italian, with ~600 class hours to full professional fluency. The grammar has cases, yes, but it’s a Romance language: huge parts of the vocabulary are already familiar if you speak any English, French, Italian or Spanish.

In the corporate center, mostly yes. At the doctor, the notary, city hall, in smaller towns, and with your Romanian family — mostly no. And even where English works, Romanian changes how people treat you. Most of our students start after their first frustrating trip to a public institution.

With two 90-minute lessons a week: basic survival Romanian in 2–3 months, everyday conversations (A2) in 4–6 months, independent speaker (B1) in 12–18 months. One of our corporate groups went from zero to conversational B1 in two and a half years — meeting twice a week, before work.

Depends on your route. Naturalization (Article 8): an oral interview at ANC — everyday conversation plus Constitution and anthem questions; solid A2 is what it takes in practice. Citizenship restoration (Article 11): since Law 14/2025 you need a B1 certificate from ILR, ICR or an accredited university. We prepare you for both.

No — and no private school can. The certificate is issued only by the Romanian Language Institute, the Romanian Cultural Institute or accredited universities. What we do is get you to B1 and prepare you specifically for that exam, including mock tests.

Yes — all courses currently run online: live sessions on Zoom or Teams with your teacher, not pre-recorded videos.

Our most popular slots for expats are 8:00–9:00 before work and after 18:00. Individual and semi-individual schedules are fully flexible and can change week to week.

No. Individual and semi-individual courses are paid per lesson (or in lesson packs, if you prefer). Group courses are paid per module of 20 lessons. If you cancel an individual lesson in time, you don’t lose it.

Massively. Romanian is their eastern cousin — you’ll recognize vocabulary from day one. Your teacher will also warn you about the false friends, so you don’t order something embarrassing.

Yes — it’s most of what we do for Romanian. Corporate groups, individual lessons for managers, level testing, HR attendance reports and per-company invoicing. Since OUG 32/2026, employers of non-EU staff are required to provide Romanian training — ask us for a compliant program.
